Horseback riding is most enjoyable during fall, spring and summer. State parks with equestrian trails and mixed-use Rails-to-Trails systems are ideal destinations for horseback riding. Riding out in the open wilderness conveys a sense of the ‘Old West,' particularly in Arizona's Grand Canyon region. Virginia's state trails in the Shenandoah Valley region and Missouri's Ozark trails are well maintained areas for horseback riding.
