WINTER ACTIVITIES:

  • Skiing - One of the number one activities is fresh powder skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort, just 8 miles away.
  • Cross Country Skiing - The scenic Whitefish Lake Golf Club is transformed in winter to the Glacier Nordic Center, offering 15 km of impeccably groomed trails for skate and classic cross country skiing.  In the evening, 3 km of trails are lit for night skiing.
  • Snowmobile Adventures - The Flathead Valley offers over 220 miles of groomed terrain and 2,000 miles of forest service roads open for your snowmobiling enjoyment.  For those renting sleds, guided trips are recommended, but not mandatory. You can choose between trips into the Kootenai and Stillwater forests or the Canyon Creek Trail System.
  • Dog Sledding - Travel at the speed of dog!  Tours are available daily at 10 AM, 1 PM and 4 PM.
  • Sleigh Rides - Enjoy an Old West tradition… Go riding! Experienced guides will take you through Montana’s treasured forests for hourly, half-day and full-day excursions. Meal packages are a great option, with overnight camping trips and covered wagon tours also available. For a truly unique experience try it in winter!
  • Ice Skating - Stumptown Ice Den is located minutes from the hotel.
  • Fishing - Montana’s Flathead Valley is the place to catch your “perfect fish.”  Record-sized lake trout, rainbow trout, large mouth bass and other fish species are found in the many lakes and rivers and provide the serious angler with days of enjoyment. The Montana Adventure Company, located in the lobby of Grouse Mountain Lodge, can arrange half-day and full-day guided trips that include all equipment for both lake fishing and fly fishing. The Whitefish area is home to over 1,500 lakes in a 50-mile radius, including the 3,350-acre Whitefish Lake, as well as Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.  The North Fork and main stem of the Flathead River are listed as blue-ribbon trout rivers.

SPRING ACTIVITIES:

  • Horseback Trail Rides - Enjoy an Old West tradition… go horseback riding!  Experienced guides will lead you through Montana’s treasured forests for hourly, half-day and full-day excursions.  Meal packages are a great option, and overnight camping trips or covered wagon tours are also available.  For a truly unique and peaceful experience try it in winter!

SUMMER ACTIVITIES:  Summer in Whitefish is a great time to come and stay.

  • Glacier National Park - Narrated sightseeing tours take passengers over the Going to the Sun Road through the heart of Glacier National Park. There are frequent stops for viewing, photography, lunch, and shopping. 40 min drive to Apgar Inn.
  • Rafting - The Middle Fork of the Flathead River makes up the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, offering tranquility amidst spectacular scenery. All half-day and full-day trips offer a variety of class two and three rapids in the John Stevens Canyon. The intermediate rapids are fun and splashy without being dangerous and require no experience. Popular activities include whitewater, scenic float, and dinner trips.
  • Walk in the Tree Tops - A half-day adventure experience that offers a unique view of the majestic forest as you walk on a canopy board-walk suspended 30-70 feet above the forest floor. Also includes a 1 mile bike ride followed by a 1/2 mile hike to begin this adventure. Walk in the Treetops is available to guests ages 10 years and up with a minimum height requirement of 54″ tall.
  • Alpine Zip Line - There is 4 separate spans connected by short walks, each with 2 parallel cables for dual riding action. The harnesses used are paragliding-style seat harnesses.  Zippers can expect to reach speeds of 50 mph or more as they travel more than 100 feet above the ground on custom-made trolleys.
  • Glacier National Park Lake Cruises - Step onto a classic boat and you will be glided across beautiful alpine lakes nestled among Glacier’s peaks. You can see a spectacular side of Glacier not visible from the road. And the Captain will share with you his love for and knowledge of this incredibly special place. Besides breath-taking beauty and interesting narration you can count on your boat tour for these opportunities: Photographic stops, optional guided hikes with later return and all weather seating and easy boarding.
  • Scenic Chair Lift Rides - Ride the chair lift on the Whitefish Mountain Resort, high above the trees and experience the spectacular views. Take a bike with you to enjoy the many trails.

FALL ACTIVITIES:

  • Hiking -  Hiking in Glacier National Park is always a favorite this time of year.  The 700+ miles of well marked trails provide an incredible variety of hiking to explore the more than 700 mountain lakes, 37 glaciers, 1,000 species of plant life and possibly a glimpse of one of the full-time residents such as grizzly and black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, deer and more.
