Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail:

Hiking & Equestrian: Designated as a segment of the Florida National Scenic Trail, this trail circles the second largest freshwater lake in the contiguous United States. The trail itself is located atop the Herbert Hoover Dike, which surrounds the lake for flood protection, and provides views ranging from scenic lakeside to working agricultural landscapes. It also takes users near and through communities that are at the heart of agriculture in this part of the state, such as Clewiston and Belle Glade. The area affords opportunities for viewing wildlife, particularly in fall and winter, when birds such as herons, egrets, and a variety of wintering waterfowl are abundant. And of course, fishing opportunities are endless.

Biking / Motor Bikes:  Clewiston offers the longest ride in the book, more than 100 miles.Okeechobee is Seminole for “big waters,” and this name is truly fitting. At more than 700 square miles in size, Lake Okeechobee is the largest lake in the state and the second largest freshwater lake in the United States.

The best time of the year to ride is between the middle of May and the middle of October, you will feel that it is the longest ride of your life; it is very flat, and will be hot and windy. It's recommended  that you alternate riding the roads with the trail on top of the dike around the lake. Each has strong points. This is indeed a challenging ride, so keep your eyes open and let it all hang out. On the roads, the traffic will be fast and light with the occasional big truck. On the trail, there will be no traffic except for an occasional slow-moving maintenance vehicle. At the periodic nodes with boat ramps, facilities, and shelters. Always watch for traffic crossing the trail.
