Nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains, Caribou Highlands Lodge offers year-round outdoor activities for all.

As a premier four-season destination resort, Caribou Highlands Logdge offers a multitude of activities and even more ways to relax. Experience all types and fun and adventure from spring river fishing, championship golf at Superior National, mountain biking and hiking in summer, fall color tours, to the best downhill skiing in Mid-America…just to name a few.

Lutsen is one of the northernmost ski areas in the United States outside of Alaska. It is located in the rugged Sawtooth Mountains, part of the Superior Highlands on the north shore of Lake Superior. Lutsen receives natural snow, at times lake effect snow from the lake at its foot, and also has snowmaking equipment. The ski season extends from November into mid-April, longer than most other resorts in the Upper Midwest.

Skiing / Snowboarding/ Snowshoeing: Caribou Highlands Lodge is a ski-in, ski-out resort. Downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing can be enjoyed on their 1,000 acres. If you are interested in downhill skiing, there are 90 runs, the longest of which is two miles. Of the cross-country skiing trails, the longest is 4.5 miles. The terrain park features boxes, rails and jumps on which you can practice snowboarding tricks. The on-site eateries and pubs let you take a break from the action and enjoy a drink or a meal.

Hiking: The North Shore of Lake Superior boasts one of the top 10 trails in the nation - the Superior Hiking Trail. The trail begins in Duluth and meanders through the ridge lines and woodlands along Superior's coast, ending at the Canadian border. While the entire trail is over 200 miles, many sections are 3-7 miles in length and are easily accessible. Other trails are also accessible from the resort and up to 15 minutes away:

- Moose Mountain and Poplar River Lutsen Mountains - walk from the resort

- Lutsen Mountains Hiking Center Lutsen Mountains - walk from the resort

- Oberg Loop Lutsen - 5 minute drive

- Cascade River State Park Lutsen - 10 minute drive

- Temperance River Gorges Schroeder - 10 minute drive

- Britton Peak Tofte - 10 minute drive

Mountain Biking: The Lutsen area provides a variety of biking opportunities from easy paved trails, dirt and mud forest service roads, to tight single tracks.

Canoeing: Minnesota's North Shore has hundreds of inland lakes and rivers and a great way to explore them is by canoe. It's easy, you can go at your own pace, and you can venture out on the smallest to the largest lakes. Paddle along shorelines, take a midday swim, bird watch, and maybe even spot a moose.

Charter Fishing:  The Lutsen Area has water - Lake Superior, dozens of inland lakes and rivers empty into the big lake and rivers where the fish are. With all the different types of waterways, conditions and habitats, figuring out fishing can be tricky. Fishing with a charter fisherman or guide greatly enhances your chance of catching fish. So whether you want to try your hand at fly fishing, catch some walleye for a fish fry or experience salmon fishing on Lake Superior, you don't have to rely solely on luck. Guides and charter fisherman typically provide all the tackle, gear, bait, life jackets and complimentary fish cleaning. You should plan on brining on a current Minnesota fishing license [ask if you need a trout stamp], camera, food and beverages, warm clothing [for fishing on Lake Superior], and a cooler for your fish!

Birding Caribou Highlands Lodge at Lusten Mountain sits in the midst of the annual spring and fall bird migration pathways. In early April, the first of migrating birds began to show up, including bald eagles and falcons. The majority of all migrant birds push through mid- to late-May around Labor Day, the nighthawk migration occurs followed by the songbird movement and then the raptor migration of late September through October. One of the best places in all of the U.S. and Canada to watch fall migrating raptors is along Minnesota's North Shore.

Golf: Caribou Highlands Lodge sits just on the side of one of Minnesota's best golf courses - the 27-hole Superior National at Lutsen. And we are 25 minutes from the local Grand Marais golf course.

Rock Climbing: Minnesota's North Shore has jagged Sawtooth rock ridges rising above the depths of Lake Superior. The varied topography strikes a stunning relief against the vast blueness of the world's largest inland lake. With all these rocks and hills, it only makes sense to go out climb a few.

Kids' Camp: Mountain Kids Camp is a wonderful program offered at the resort. Our adult camp counselors plan 3 hours of fun activities. Each camp session starts with introductions and a chance to get to know each other over an art activity. Then  the kids get moving with some play time - often they head to the pool for some splashing and swimming with full time supervision! Then kids dry off and wind down with a craft activity and games.  Each camp session has a theme: Nature ... Animals ... Adventure ... Make-Believe ... and all the activities that day center around the theme. Be sure to ask for the current schedule at check-in.

Massage: The Superior Waters Spa and Wellness Center - Massage services are provided by members of an association of experienced wellness professionals who work cooperatively at two north shore locations. Services are provided in a homey atmosphere surrounded by the calming, soothing beauty of nature, on the shores of magnificent Lake Superior.
